Before World War II, Winton was a stock trader in London. On his way through Czechoslovakia, he discovered a large group of Jewish children being detained by the Nazis. He persuaded the German military to release them and handed them over to him to be transported to Britain. The rescue work was dangerous and arduous. Ultimately, he used all his connections to rescue 669 children with eight trains and kept this secret for half a century. Meanwhile, many of the children's parents did not survive the concentration camps.
