The 52nd Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary. Also known as "China's Mayor," this independent documentary, directed by Zhou Hao, chronicles the arduous journey of Mayor Geng Yanbo during his tenure in restoring the ancient city of Datong, Shanxi. Once a bustling Chinese metropolis, Datong now stands beside a pile of ruins. The city is not only severely polluted but also on the verge of collapse due to its outdated infrastructure and precarious economic outlook. However, Mayor Geng is determined to change this. He boldly announces a new plan to reshape the city's former glory, considering that the city's civilization dates back 1,600 years. However, this plan comes with extremely high costs. Thousands of houses are demolished, and 500,000 residents (30% of Datong's total population) will be relocated under his management. The mayor's success or failure hinges entirely on whether he can calm the angry labor group and the increasingly anxious ruling elite. The documentary "China's Mayor" stunningly captures the process of a man, and even a nation, leaping into an increasingly turbulent future.
